Madrid was named for the city in Spain, but nobody here says it that way — it's MAD-rid, stress on the first syllable, and locals will gently correct you. The name came with the town in 1905, when a land speculator beat a rival to the courthouse to record it first and then threw a barbecue with a brass band to sell the lots. There's even a little street off the main road called Vuelta, a quiet nod to the namesake.
It's a small place — about 265 people on US-231, seven miles north of the Florida line. A Railroad Town in the Dothan Metro
Madrid exists because the Bay Line Railroad came through in 1905 on its way from Panama City to Dothan, and the town grew up at the crossing of the rail line and the road. Cotton, timber, and turpentine built it; the boll weevil took most of it back. What's left is a quiet Wiregrass community close enough to Dothan to shop there and far enough out to keep its own name.
